Lost in Translation Part 2

We have several international students in the course this term: three from Hong Kong; one from Taiwan; one from Brazil; one from Vietnam.

They are settling in well and seem to cope magnificently with the chilly British weather. One even wishes for snow in December.

In one of the students tutorial sessions they raised the issue of not understanding acronyms used in correspondence (like ED for Education or RE for registered and EN for enrolled) and some academic terms like MLD for Moderate Learning Disabilities or NC for National Curriculum).

I have to admit that I too struggle with acronyms lately:

  • DLSR Digital Single Lens Reflect
  • LCD Liquid Crystal Display
  • HD High Definition
  • PDA Personal Data Assistant /Public Display of Affection(?)
  • HHWW Holding Hand While Walking!!
  • FFS Bleep, bleep, bleep

But I do understand WTF!! Not quite the lady you think I am at times.
